Reading Poetry and Prose: Eye Movements and Acoustic Evidence

چکیده
We examined genre-specific reading strategies for literary texts and hypothesized that text categorization (literary prose vs. poetry) modulates both how readers gather information from a (eye movements) they realize its phonetic surface form (speech production). recorded eye movements speech while college students (N = 32) orally read identical we categorized formatted as either or poetry. further varied the position of critical regions (text-initial text-medial) to compare is articulated with without context; this allowed us assess whether make differential use context information. observed genre-dependent differences in speaking tempo reflected several aspects articulation. Analyses interests revealed word-skipping increased particularly progressed through condition; rhythm was more pronounced poetry condition irrespective position. Our results characterize strategic reading, indicate adjustments behavior partly reflect form, shed light onto dynamics reading. They generally support theory comprehension assumes distinct processing modes incorporates an initial step.

Reading aloud: eye movements and prosody
This study aims to connect data from ocular movements and reading aloud speech to syntactic and discursive properties of texts, in order to understand integrative cognitive processes during reading for understanding and to identify prosodic and eye movements’ indicators of reading fluency. Assuming that in reading aloud there is a close interaction between syntax structure and speech prosody, w...
متن کاملEye Movements in Reading: Models and Data.
Models of eye movement control in reading and their impact on the field are discussed. Differences between the E-Z Reader model and the SWIFT model are reviewed, as are benchmark data that need to be accounted for by any model of eye movement control. Predictions made by the models and how models can sometimes account for counterintuitive findings are also discussed. Finally, the role of models...
متن کاملEvidence for direct control of eye movements during reading.
It is well established that fixation durations during reading vary with processing difficulty, but there are different views on how oculomotor control, visual perception, shifts of attention, and lexical (and higher cognitive) processing are coordinated. Evidence for a one-to-one translation of input delay into saccadic latency would provide a much needed constraint for current theoretical prop...
متن کاملVowel processing during silent reading: evidence from eye movements.
Two eye movement experiments examined whether skilled readers include vowels in the early phonological representations used in word recognition during silent reading. Target words were presented in sentences preceded by parafoveal previews in which the vowel phoneme was concordant or discordant with the vowel phoneme in the target word. In Experiment 1, the orthographic vowel differed from the ...
متن کاملEye movements during mindless reading.
Mindless reading occurs when the eyes continue moving across the page even though the mind is thinking about something unrelated to the text. Despite how commonly it occurs, very little is known about mindless reading. The present experiment examined eye movements during mindless reading. Comparisons of fixation-duration measures collected during intervals of normal reading and intervals of min...
